Paver Calculator

Estimate how many pavers you need for patios, walkways, and driveways — including joints and waste.

Inputs

Typical sand joints: 2–4 mm.
10% is typical for patios; more for patterns with many cuts.

How to Calculate Pavers

  1. Find the area to cover: length × width.
  2. Add the joint width to the paver length and width — that's the true footprint of each unit.
  3. Divide the area by the footprint, then add waste: multiply by 1 + waste% (10% is typical) and round up.

Formula Used

Footprint = (Paver length + Joint) × (Paver width + Joint)
Pavers = Area ÷ Footprint × (1 + Waste %)

Worked Example

A 6m × 4m patio using 200×100mm pavers with 3mm joints and 10% waste:

Area = 24 m²
Footprint = 0.203 × 0.103 = 0.0209 m²
Pavers = 24 ÷ 0.0209 × 1.10 = 1,263 pavers

When to Use This Calculator

Use this when quoting patios, walkways, driveways, and courtyard jobs — so your paver order covers the layout plus joints, cuts, and breakage.

When Not to Use This Calculator

Complex herringbone or circular patterns need more waste allowance than straight courses. For large commercial jobs, use the supplier's layout program.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pavers per square metre?

For 200×100mm pavers with 3mm joints, about 48 per m². Bigger pavers (400×200mm) drop that to roughly 12 per m².

What waste allowance should I use?

10% covers straight patterns and minor breakage. Bump it to 15% for diagonal layouts or jobs with lots of cuts.
