01 · Compact tool carriers

Skid steers and compact track loaders

Both turn within a compact footprint and accept many attachments. Skid steers run on tires; compact track loaders use rubber tracks for greater flotation and traction on challenging ground.

Selection questions

  • Hard surface or soft and uneven ground?
  • Required rated operating capacity and lift height?
  • Radial or vertical lift path for the work?
  • Standard- or high-flow auxiliary hydraulics?
  • Machine width, height, weight and trailer capacity?

Field focus

Choose the machine and attachment as a system. Hydraulic flow, operating capacity, coupler type, machine stability and manufacturer approval must all suit the attachment and task.

02 · Digging & reach

Excavators

Excavators range from compact machines for restricted sites to large production units. The upper structure rotates, giving the boom and attachment a wide working envelope.

Selection questions

  • Required dig depth, reach and dumping height?
  • Material, bucket size and expected production?
  • Conventional, reduced or zero-tail-swing configuration?
  • Ground bearing conditions and track width?
  • Is lifting required, and what does the load chart permit?

  • Underground and overhead utilities
  • Excavation edge stability and safe machine position
  • Swing radius, counterweight and blind areas
  • Quick-coupler engagement and attachment condition
  • Travel direction, slopes and changing ground conditions
Field focus

Excavator lifting capacity changes with radius, boom position, undercarriage orientation, attachment and ground setup. Use the exact machine’s load chart and approved lifting procedure.

03 · Two machines in one

Backhoe loaders

A front loader and rear digging boom make backhoes useful for utility, municipal and smaller construction work where mobility and task variety matter.

The backhoe’s versatility depends on proper setup. Confirm bearing support under the stabilizers and keep workers outside the complete loader, boom and stabilizer working envelope.

04 · Material handling

Wheel loaders

Articulated wheel loaders are designed for repeated loading, carrying and stockpile cycles. Compact, mid-size and large machines serve very different production needs.

  • Material density and required bucket capacity?
  • Truck side height and loading clearance?
  • Required tipping load and operating load?
  • Cycle distance, grade and underfoot conditions?
  • Bucket, forks, coupler and other attachment needs?

  • Overloading from dense or wet material
  • Stockpile face condition and falling material
  • Articulation and rear-counterweight blind areas
  • Raised-load travel and uneven ground
  • Tire condition, pressure and wheel spin
Field focus

Bucket volume alone does not determine a safe load. Material density, bucket fill, attachment weight, machine configuration and the manufacturer’s rated limits must be considered together.

Attachments

The tool changes the machine.

Buckets, forks, breakers, augers, compactors, grapples, brooms and other attachments change weight, balance, hydraulic demand, visibility and operating procedure.
