01 · Placement

Asphalt pavers

The paver receives hot mix, moves it through the machine and spreads it with the screed. Consistent flow and forward motion are central to a consistent mat.

Field focus

Match paver speed to the plant, trucks and rollers. Long stops can affect temperature and smoothness; rushing can starve the augers or overwhelm the rolling train.

02 · Compaction

Tandem-drum rollers

Two smooth steel drums provide static, vibratory or oscillatory effort depending on the machine and setup. Their role in the rolling pattern changes with the mix and job.

  • Amplitude, frequency and impact spacing
  • Travel speed and number of passes
  • Mat temperature and available rolling window
  • Water spray coverage and drum cleanliness

Watch in the field

  • Keep the agreed pattern repeatable
  • Change direction smoothly and off the hot mat where possible
  • Do not vibrate while stopped
  • Watch for pickup, checking or displacement
  • Confirm edges and joints receive planned coverage
Field focus

More passes are not automatically better. The correct pattern should be confirmed through the project’s mix, lift, temperature, test strip and density requirements.

03 · Kneading action

Pneumatic rollers

Overlapping rubber tires apply contact pressure and kneading action. Ballast and tire pressure influence the applied load, while warm clean tires help reduce pickup.

  • Coverage width and tire overlap
  • Operating speed and position in the pattern

04 · Surface removal

Cold milling machines

A rotating cutting drum removes pavement and a conveyor loads the material. Milling establishes the surface the paving operation inherits.

  • Required cutting width and maximum depth?
  • Full-lane production or detail work?
  • Grade, slope or profile-control requirements?
  • Truck loading direction and available clearance?
  • Utilities, structures and traffic constraints?

Inspect the milled surface before tack and paving. Verify depth, drainage, transitions, cleanliness and any areas requiring correction.

05 · Continuous flow

Material transfer vehicles

Material transfer vehicles can provide storage, remix material and feed the paver without direct truck contact, depending on the machine and project setup.

An MTV cannot fix poor coordination by itself. Truck dispatch, paver pace, storage capacity and rolling production still need to work as one system.

Sweepers and support equipment

The paving train also relies on sweepers, tack distributors, water and fuel support, skid steers, loaders, lighting and traffic-control equipment.

Surface preparation

  • Remove loose millings, dust and debris
  • Clean joints, edges, structures and low areas
  • Confirm the surface is suitable for tack
  • Protect drains, vehicles and adjacent property
  • Recheck after construction traffic crosses the surface

Production support

  • Plan water and fuel before shortages stop production
  • Keep handwork tools and small compaction equipment ready
  • Provide lighting without creating glare or blind spots
  • Separate equipment movements from workers and public traffic
  • Record support equipment in the daily report
